Designed to encourage a spirit of camaraderie and the art of persuasion among chief residents from each Section, the AUA National Chief Resident Debate will have selected topics from different fields of interest provided by recognized experts in these fields. The debate will consist of eight 10-minute debates.

Meet the 2018 Debaters

Mid-Atlantic

Devang Sharma, MD

Devang Sharma, MD
University of Virginia
Graduation Date: June 2019

Devang studied engineering at the University of Maryland and received his medical degree from Dartmouth. After his chief year at the University of Virginia, he will be a fellow in male infertility, sexual medicine, and reconstruction at NYU. He is looking for employment opportunities in community or academic urology for 2020. Outside of urology, his interests include crab cakes and football.


Kenneth Witmer, MD

Kenny is a native of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, where he was born and raised. As an undergraduate, he majored in Neuroscience and Public Health Studies at Johns Hopkins University. After completing medical school at Georgetown University, he stayed on at Medstar Georgetown University Hospital to complete his Urology residency. Outside of the medical field, he enjoys traveling with his wife and running in the DC area. He keeps himself busy reading non-Urology books and hanging out with his dog, Niko. Kenny is happy to attend the AUA this year and honored to participate in this year's AUA Chief Resident Debate.

New England

Annah Jean Vollstedt, MD

Annah grew up in Sioux City, Iowa. She earned her degree in Communication Studies from the University of Iowa and remained in the Hawkeye state for medical school. For residency, she ditched the corn fields of Iowa for the White Mountains of New Hampshire. She is currently a PGY-4 resident at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center and is applying for a fellowship position in Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery.


Paul Bower, MD

Graduation Date: June 2019

Paul is a fourth year urology resident at Brown University's Warren Alpert School of Medicine. He is poised to pursue a successful career in general urology with interests in urolithiasis, benign prostatic hyperplasia, prostate cancer and urethral stricture disease. He will be presenting his abstract on the appropriate use of stent omission after ureteroscopic lithotripsy at the AUA. He is a graduate of Boston University School of Medicine, a member of Alpha Omega Alpha, and combat veteran after deploying to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom as a medical officer attached to the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing.

New York

John N. Graham, Jr., MD

John N. Graham, Jr., MD

John is a graduate of Temple University School of Medicine where he obtained his medical degree in May, 2013. He is completing his urology residency at SUNY Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY. After graduation, John will be pursuing the Felix and Mildred Yip Fellowship in Advanced Robotics and Laparoscopy at the USC Institute of Urology. He is a current member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society, and a proud former captain of the Syracuse University Men's Cross Country and Track & Field teams.


Wai Lee, MD

Wai is currently a urology resident at Stony Brook Medicine, where he also attended medical school. He will be graduating this June, at which point he will continue his training as a female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery fellow at Virginia Mason. When not in the hospital, Wai spends his time with his wife (also a urology resident) traveling, finding great restaurants and watching movies together. He is also a faithful Mets fan.

North Central

Shyam Sunder Sukumar, MD

Dr. Shyam Sukumar is a resident in Urology at the University of Minnesota. Born and raised in India in an Air Force family, his itinerant childhood has shaped him into a curious individual coupled with an open mind and a positive attitude. He has actively engaged in clinical research and has published over 50 research articles in peer-reviewed journals, including articles in BMJ, Journal of the National Cancer Institute and Journal of Urology. He intends to pursue an academic career in reconstructive urology with the goal of translating research into improving patient outcomes. His hobbies include running, swimming and traveling.


Matthew J. Ziegelmann, MD

Matthew J. Ziegelmann, MD
Mayo Clinic – Rochester
Graduation Date: June 2018

Matt graduated from the University of Minnesota Medical school in 2009. He will complete his urology residency at Mayo Clinic in 2018. Subsequently, he will be pursuing an Andrology Fellowship at Rush University in Chicago, IL. He is married and has a two year-old son. In his spare time he enjoys spending time at the lake and skiing.

Northeastern

Michael Daugherty, MD

Michael is currently a chief urology resident at SUNY Upstate Medical University. He is originally from Huntington Station, NY and attended college at the University of Delaware, where he graduated summa cum laude with an Honors Degree with Distinction. He then went on to attend medical school at SUNY Upstate Medical University and was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society. He will be completing residency this year and will start a pediatric urology fellowship at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center in July.


Katherine Theisen, MD

Katherine is a Minnesota native that moved to Pittsburgh for residency. She is in the process of interviewing for a fellowship in genitourinary reconstructive urology. The only thing she has ever debated was whether to compete in the AUA Chief Resident Debate.

South Central

James R. Furr, MD

James R. Furr, MD
University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center
Graduation Date: June 2018

Dr. Furr grew up primarily in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He then ventured to Trinity University in San Antonio for college where he also played NCAA tennis. For medical school he returned to the University of Oklahoma and was fortunate enough to also match there for his urology residency. Following graduation, he will continue his training at University of California, Irvine for a fellowship in Male Reconstructive Urology.


Nirmish Singla, MD

University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center
Graduation Date: June 2018

Nirmish is currently chief resident at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center (UTSW) in Dallas, TX, and will begin an SUO fellowship in urologic oncology following graduation. He completed his bachelor’s degree in biomedical engineering as well as his MD from the University of Michigan. Outside of the hospital, Nirmish enjoys playing tennis and spending time with his wife, who is a fellow in pediatric hematology/oncology at UTSW as well.

Southeastern

Jeffrey Pearl, MD

Jeffrey Pearl, MD
Emory University
Graduation Date: June 2018

Jeffrey grew up in the Chicago suburbs. He studied Bioengineering at the University of Illinois. He went on to Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine and upon graduation began his training in Urology at Emory University. He plans to graduate in June of 2018, and following graduation Dr. Pearl will be returning to the Chicagoland area to begin practice.


Shenelle Wilson, MD

Shenelle is originally from Toronto, Canada but spent her formative years in Silver Spring, Maryland. She graduated Cum Laude from La Universidad Adventista de las Antillas in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico with a BS in Nursing in 2006 and graduated Magna Cum Laude from Morehouse School of Medicine in 2013. She is currently a chief resident at MCG at Augusta University and will be starting an FPMRS fellowship at The University of Alabama in July 2018. After fellowship, Dr. Wilson plans to pursue a career in academic medicine.

Western

Hamed Ahmadi, MD

Graduation Date: June 2019

Hamed was born and raised in Hamedan in Iran. He moved to the capital city of Tehran to attend medical school. Afterwards, he moved to the United States and is currently doing his residency training in Portland.  Dr. Ahmadi is applying for a Urology Oncology fellowship this year and is hopeful to begin his fellowship in 2019 after finishing residency. Outside of the hospital, he enjoys swimming and running and is currently training for an upcoming triathlon competition in July.


Christopher Dru, MD

Graduation Date: June 2018

Christopher is a chief resident in the urology residency program at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. He completed his undergraduate studies at the University of San Diego and received his medical degree from Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine. In his free time, he enjoys tennis, golf, soccer, and fly fishing.
